Large Group

Yes and No. You can broadcast something online to keep your participants encouraged and connected. However, there are some things you can do, some you can’t, and then there are recommendations that we have so that we don’t confuse a newcomer at this time. Please continue through the additional questions in this section for details.

The copyright is about reproduction of the material. If you post it online in any way (written or verbal), you've reproduced it. If you read it out loud in a closed group that is not being recorded, you have not reproduced it.

We recommend you stay away from calling it “CR Live” or “Large Group Meeting” or anything along those lines, as this could confuse a newcomer. We’ll be covering things we would not in a regular Large Group Meeting. This is NOT a CR Large Group Meeting and we would not want a newcomer thinking this it is and then being confused once they are able to attend in person. Instead, just call it something like, “Worship and a testimony, or an encouraging message, recovery talk, etc.).”

No, this is a copyright violation. This means the content cannot be reproduced in any way, which would include verbal or written. However, taking a sentence or two from any of these materials and using it to build your own devo, teaching, message is okay to do under Fair Use copyright laws.

Yes and No. You cannot broadcast the Testimonies-To-Go, as this is a copyright violation, just like with the CR Lessons. You can, however, broadcast a testimony from one of your leaders or participants as long as they are aware that it will be publicly accessible and are okay with it. If you pull a testimony from youtube or another CR page, please review it beforehand just as you would for your regular CR testimonies to ensure it is a model CR testimony.

You can have music. Some are having several people do this as a group (practice social distancing please!), while others have one or two people with just a guitar. You can also share a devo-type encouragement or discuss a recovery topic (just not using the CR Lessons). For example, you could talk/teach about denial, your own experience with it and scriptures to help deal with it, without doing the Denial Lesson from the Leader’s Guide.

This is completely up to the Ministry Leader of the local CR that you are involved in. Some feel it's a distraction from the actual testimony, and others feel that it complements it. If you are the Ministry Leader or on the TEAM, discuss this as a TEAM to decide on your local practice.

I do understand your concerns. However, that being said, there are so many things we can do to help and support those in our ministries with their recoveries during this time without violating copyrighted laws. For example, the leaders/teachers in our local CRs should have no problem with talking about Denial (or any other recovery topic) without teaching the specific CR lessons (or any other copyrighted materials) on our live feeds. We have all dealt with denial, been in denial, worked on denial, etc. and can certainly share our experiences and insight to help those in recovery. We can have music and testimonies on our live feeds. We can even take small excerpts from copyrighted materials and expand or teach on that small excerpt under the Fair Use laws. We can do bible/book studies together on zoom by purchasing the materials we will cover and read through, and discuss them together. We can talk one-on-one with each other to talk through recovery topics. I cannot tell you if anyone has reached out to Zondervan for that purpose, be we simply don't feel it's necessary to do so because there is so much we can offer and do. Our nightly Celebrate Recovery official Facebook Lives are a great example of this. All of us on the National Team are offering encouragement and insights into recovery and spiritual topics every single night without using copyrighted materials and people are saying it's helping them get through this. You can even post these to your local CR page. I hope this helps! It's all about your perspective :).

Our suggestion is to name it something other than "Celebrate Recovery Live" as this may confuse a newcomer since this is not actually a live Celebrate Recovery meeting. Our local CR description for our live broadcast is simply "Worship and Encouragement." However, if this is broadcast from a local CRs Facebook Page, it will show that group as the host of the live event. So, it would look something like "Name of the Church Celebrate Recovery is live" with the description of "Worship and Encouragement" (or whatever you name it) right below it.
